The Vampire Diaries é uma série de televisão americana de Drama e Suspense desenvolvida por Kevin Williamson e Julie Plec e baseada na série de livros de mesmo nome escrita por L. J. Smith. A série estreou na televisão americana pela emissora The CW em 10 de setembro de 2009. A série segue os eventos na cidade de Mystic Falls, Virginia. Uma pequena cidade fictícia assombrada por seres sobrenaturais. O foco principal da série é o triângulo amoroso entre a protagonista, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) e os irmãos, Stefan (Paul Wesley) e Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Os dois tem um passado sombrio. Mais tarde, a luz é lançada sobre o misterioso passado da cidade, envolvendo a ancestral de Elena, Katherine, e a família original, que deram origem aos vampiros. 

Elena sempre foi uma ótima estudante, linda, popular e envolvida com a escola e seus amigos. Quando o semestre começa Elena fica fascinada com o novo garoto da escola Stefan Salvatore, um vampiro de 162 anos. Enquanto Stefan luta para viver em paz com os humanos, seu irmão Damon é a personificação da violência e brutalidade.

O episódio piloto atraiu a maior audiência da história da emissora desde a sua estreia em 2006. A primeira temporada teve uma média de 3,60 milhões de telespectadores. A série recebeu indicações a vários prêmios, ganhou um People's Choice Award e sete Teen Choice Awards.

The Vampire Diaries is an American television series of drama and suspense developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and based on the book series of the same name written by l. j. Smith. The series premiered on American television by the issuer The CW in September 10, 2009. The series follows the events in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. A small fictional town haunted by supernatural beings. The main focus of the series is the love triangle between the protagonist, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). The two have a dark past. Later, the light is thrown on the mysterious past of the city, involving the ancestor of Elena, Katherine, and the original family, which gave rise to the vampires.
 
Elena has always been a great student, beautiful, popular and involved with the school and his friends. When the semester begins Elena is fascinated with the new school boy Stefan Salvatore, a 162-year-old vampire. While Stefan struggles to live in peace with humans, his brother Damon is the personification of violence and brutality.
The pilot episode attracted the largest audience in the history of the station since its debut in 2006.2 the first season had an average of 3.60 million viewers. The series received a number of awards, won a People's Choice Award and seven Teen Choice Awards.
